LISTEN!

In 1974 Coca Cola came out with a commercial song called It’s the Real Thing. This little ditty took the airwaves by storm for several years and had everybody in the country humming the tune and pattin’ their feet. “It’s the real thing … what the world wants today,” the young people sang. And so it is today. People everywhere are looking for something real …”the real thing.”

Click the link below, pat your foot along with me, and listen to the song. Then click back into today’s Dose of Encouragement as we start our week with a question. How do you know “the real thing” when you see it?

LISTEN!

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

John 17:17

Why is it so important to be the real thing – to listen and live in the truth? Look around. I think we’d all agree there is a shortage of people who are what they say they are and how is that working out for us? We live in an age when so many say whatever they want others to believe, whether it’s the truth or not.  Many think it’s okay to lie as long as it furthers their own agendas. So if we aren’t careful, we wonder who to believe.

Many are falling for a lie because they haven’t heard the truth – or didn’t listen to it when they did.

When my children were growing up, I’d tell them to do something and especially if they didn’t want to hear it, they’d keep doing what they were doing. At that point I’d clap loudly and say “Listen to me!” Then I’d get down on my knees, go nose to nose with them, and say, “I need your attention. Look into Mama’s eyes.” Pointing from their eyes to mine, I would know I had their attention. Well, hopefully. Sometimes I only had their eyes. Their thoughts were still on what they were doing before I pulled them aside.

Jesus had the same problem. Over 50 times in scripture He would say, “Listen!” For example in Matthew 13:3-9, he began his parable with “Listen!”  He ended the story 9 verses later with the phrase, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

Over fifty times he said it. Why? Because He knew if we chose to listen and understand God’s Word, His truth, we would recognize a lie when we saw it. He knew we wouldn’t be so easily deceived. That’s why He said in John 17:17

Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.”

And again in John 8:32 Jesus says,

“And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (HCSB)

And again in John 8:36:

Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Knowing truth causes us to recognize hypocrisy and deception when we see it and to be free from it. And Christ wants us to be free in the truest sense of the word!

THE REAL THING

If someone claims, “I know him well!” but doesn’t keep his commandments,

he’s obviously a liar. His life doesn’t match his words…

I John 2:4

“Boys, what you do speaks so loud I can’t hear a word you say,” I said to my three energizer bunny driven sons. I said those words more times than I can count. I wanted them to grow up understanding if their words didn’t match their actions; they were not the real thing. If there has ever been a time when we as a people need to know how to identify the real thing – the truth – when we see it, it is now.

Hypocrisy: A word unbelievers often apply to those who claim to be Christians. However, that’s only one example of the word. Anytime a person claims one thing with his lips, yet consistently lives in opposition to what he says he believes, he is a hypocrite.  That is true in the work place, the home, in religion or in politics where we see it especially during election season. <sigh> I am so weary of the never ending hypocrisy of political campaigns … well, I could just spit! Do I hear an amen?

But I digress … back to the Dose … wherever hypocrisy is found, deception abounds.   Hypocrisy leads to deception and deception leads to defeat for who those who fall for it.

Jesus was well acquainted with the problem. In the middle of a sermon to the religions and political leaders of His day, He called them hypocrites and vipers – snakes! (Matthew 23:33) He quickly let us know how He felt about hypocrites in

Matthew 23:28,

“Outwardly you look like righteous people,

but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.”

It’s clear Jesus didn’t like hypocrisy any more than we do. And He points out that if we say we believe in Him and don’t do what He said, we are one. Or as The Message says,

“If someone claims, “I know him well!” but doesn’t keep his commandments,

he’s obviously a liar. His life doesn’t match his words.”

I John 2:4

He was the champion of the people then and is still the champion of the people now. His primary concern is for our spiritual life and includes our lives here on earth. It grieves Him when we are not who we say we are. Why? In John 10:10 Jesus said:

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that

they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (NKJV)

Heart Matters: A Clean Heart

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7, NASB

A Clean Heart

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10, NLT

OLD_HEART_5If you’ve ever met a toddler, then you know we are born into sin. Oh, I joke. But only a little, because as adults we haven’t changed much. We still fight with selfish desire and even know how to throw a grown up tantrum. Did you read yesterday’s Dose?

David, a man after God’s own heart, knew a thing or two about selfish desires. Maybe you know the story about his relationship with Bathsheba, but in case you don’t, I’ll sum it up for you. David had a crush on Bathsheba, which was a bit of a problem because Bathsheba was married to another man named Uriah. That didn’t stop David, who proceeded to commit adultery with her, in which she conceived a child. If that’s not enough drama for you, he then proceeded to have her husband killed. I recommend reading the whole story in 2 Samuel 11.

God was anything but pleased with their behavior, and both David and Bathsheba endured devastating consequences of their actions when their child died. David, his soul crushed with grief and by the weight of his sin, cried out to God with a heart of repentance in Psalm 51. While this story lacks no element of sin and drama, it is also a beautiful picture of God’s redemption. He didn’t choose someone more worthy to take David’s place on the throne, instead He restored a repentant David and He restores us too.

Each and every one of us sin. We often compare our sins to others in an attempt to justify our actions and attitudes. Or we may believe that God gives more weight to some sins than others, but nowhere in scripture is that faulty way of thinking substantiated. Adultery, gossip, addiction, pride, greed: sin is sin. Each of us stand guilty before our Holy God.

Is there sin that has been allowed to reside in your heart for too long? Have you made a choice that you feel is so horrific you haven’t sought forgiveness from God because you can’t even forgive yourself? Friend, 1 John 1:9 tells us, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (NASB).

If you are willing, like David, to confess and repent of your sin, God is waiting to create in you a clean heart and to renew the spirit within you.

Praying for a clean heart,

Traci
