Give a Kid a Chance
From the Desk of Brenda Lancaster
Thank you for your support through the years. Today’s letter is one I never expected to write. Because of violent political upheaval in Nicaragua, our national directors Manuel and Odily, their family, our children in the SCHOOL OF HOPE FOR CHILDREN OF PROMISE, and hundreds of our ministry families across the country need our help like never before.
It is so serious that Tom and I went to Washington D.C. recently to bring it before our Congressman Ted Budd. He considered it so serious that he spoke from the floor of the House of Representatives this past Wednesday. He has also solicited help from both of our N.C. Senators, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. For more details on this situation we have posted two videos here on our website. I urge you to view both videos and share it with others.
Since ZMI began ministry in Nicaragua in 2009, we have taken mission teams every year. With your generous support the Lord allowed us to build a church and school on the edge of the largest landfill in Central America. Families there live in unspeakable poverty. Where no hope existed before, church attendance now averages 120, with 35 children enrolled in the School of Hope.
Without you, these children would never have had the opportunity for an education because those who cannot pay for uniforms, shoes, school supplies, and books, are not allowed to attend public school. Without an education they have little hope of breaking the cycle of poverty. A basic education and learning a trade will give them the chance for a better future outside the landfill.
And now, with the current crisis in the country, more children than ever before need this opportunity.
Government violence against the people have led to over 400 people being killed by the police and paramilitary. Hundreds of buildings, businesses, family homes, two universities and at least one hospital have been burned out by government authorities. Hundreds are being jailed and kidnapped with thousands injured. 85% of the work force have lost their jobs-at least temporarily if not permanently. Food is in very short supply; many grocery store shelves are empty.
With the help of God and our partners, we have recently supplied church families and school children with food and water to help get them through this current crisis. However, other basic necessities remain unmet. We literally have hundreds of families, who have been involved with our ministry for years, now desperate for help. We need more people like you to meet this current challenge.
Before the crisis began we were already organizing a Summer Campaign called Give a Kid a Chance, to recruit 150 committed sponsors to support the addition of new students at $39 a month per child. This is our ultimate goal and begins this week – August 1, 2018. You will be given the name, picture and story of a child that you can personally communicate with each month via email or WhatsApp, including video so that you can see your child grow with new hope for a brighter future.
More urgent, and because of the great need created by the current crisis, we also must raise $16,000. This is our Urgent goal. 100% of this goal will go to the School of Hope and will be used to:
- Provide spiritual and emotional help to those traumatized by the violence, especially the children.
- Provide food, water, and basic essentials to those families in our ministry with the greatest need.
- Meet the need for our existing 35 students for this next semester.
- Receive 20 new students immediately.
- Provide furnishings for two classrooms.
- Provide books, supplies, and teachers for the fall semester.

I understand these are lofty goals. But we serve a Mighty God who promised in Ephesians 3:20 that He can do it!
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
Thank you for your help for these precious people whose only hope is God. And from Jesus’ own lips, when we do anything for the least of these…we do it for Him.
